NBSA Welcomes New Executive Director

Fredericton, NB - The Board of Directors is pleased to announce the hiring of Bibi Wasiimah Joomun as its new Executive Director of the New Brunswick Student Alliance (NBSA). Joomun began her term on May 20, 2020.

“As a past student leader, it’s been a dream of mine to continue working with eager student leaders who are passionate about influencing and improving the post-secondary education sector in the province,” said Wasiimah. “I am looking forward to increasing student engagement with the organization, while continuing to ensure that the interests of our students are at the forefront of our work.”

Joomun is originally from Curepipe, Mauritius and is a graduate from St. Thomas University, Fredericton, where she has an honours degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice, with a major in Psychology. During her time at St. Thomas, Joomun was heavily involved with the St. Thomas University Students’ Union (STUSU) as the International Student Representative, Vice President Student Life and Board of Governors Student Representative in her 2nd, 3rd and 4th year respectively. She was also a Residence Advisor for 3 years and the President of the International Students’ Association at STU in her final year. Her involvement with the NBSA began when she was a delegate for the 2017 and 2018 Advocacy Week.

“Wasiimah’s experience in post-secondary education and her passion for student issues will ensure a very successful future for the NBSA and for students in New Brunswick,” said Patrick Hickey, Chair of the NBSA Board of Directors. “Having just recently graduated, it will be very advantageous for the NBSA and the students we represent to have an Executive Director that’s still very rooted in what it means to be a student, and the struggles we face,” added Sarah Kohut, Vice-Chair of the NBSA Board of Directors.

The Board of Directors would like to thank Kjeld-Mizpah Conyers-Steede for his tremendous work and high level commitment to the organization and wish him the best in his future endeavours. The 2020-2021 Board of Directors, alongside the new Executive Director, are looking forward to continuing the work of the NBSA towards an accessible, affordable, and inclusive post-secondary education for students in the province.
